Okay--is this a short story collection or a kaleidoscopic novella made of a random mix of abrupt and (mostly) unfinished episodes? It sure feels like the latter.Mr. Washington can write prose well--he is not original but he's not mediocre either. Unfortunately, that's pretty much where his skills end at least as of this achievement.I have never read a more bland collection of stories in my entire life: they ALL blend into one another. I cannot honestly say where one finished and the other begun; what was the difference between one protagonist and the other; all the characters were one-dimensional, forgettable, unremarkable; some stories had the same protagonist--OR, maybe not, I was too confused to follow.Furthermore, the tone and the voice of the entire collection were the SAME, hence I cannot really call Mr. Washington a "real" author yet--writing prose does not just produce one, otherwise, anyone could claim the title. Plus, the story arc was mostly absent from those "stories" -- they read more like random diary entries. I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this collection of short stories right when I needed something authentic, genuine and tender. Washington writes without pretense, without being self congratulatory or self deprecating. He doesn't want us feeling sorry for him or exoticing him, he doesn't want us asking, How were you able to love through all of that? He's just opening up a window into his world, as we pass by. We can steal a quick glance, or stop and stare. But either way, he won't be looking back at us.A beautiful collection of stories that I am sure to re-read. I can't wait to read what's yet to come from this young man.
