I read The Mermaid Murders and really liked it. I heard all these amazing things about Josh Lanyon. So I tried the first Holmes and Moriarty novel. Meh, cold on it. So I thought, the Adrien English mysteries seem to be the most beloved; I’ll try those. My impression of this is still Meh, I’m cold on it. I didn’t think the characters were particularly interesting. I also feel very ambivalent about closeted characters trying to date out characters. It always seems unfair to the out guy and makes me just dislike the closeted guy, no matter what his reasons. He just seems selfish. I thought the plot moved very slowly, so even though I read it in one sitting, I felt vaguely bored. It didn’t take me long to finish it, maybe 4 hours, so at least it wasn’t very long. I don’t think I’ll continue this series. I guess I’m just not her target audience. Since I’ve read this once and listened to it 3 times now I guess I should write some type of review. When I first read this, maybe 4 years ago??, I wasn’t that impressed. Mysteries are my favorite but there was something about Lanyon’s storytelling that I had to warm up to. I continued with the series and over the course of reading I became a huge fan of these books and Josh Lanyon.This series has made me feel a myriad of emotions. I love Adrien’s snark and his bravado. I also want to smack him for being a doormat and making bad decisions that almost get him killed time and time again. I still have mixed emotions about Jake. No matter how many times I read or listen to this series I get so angry at Jake. But that goes into future books and this is only the first one.For me this book is just the kind of mystery/murder book I love. It’s a classic whodunit that Lanyon puts her own spin on. Adrien is pulled into a murder case and finds he’s quite intuitive enough to look into the murder himself. He also doesn’t want to be arrested for something he didn’t do so he starts off doing his own sleuthing to protect himself. He has a way of pissing off the cops right from the start. There is no romance in this book but we see into Adrien’s mostly solitary life. I always feel a bit sorry for Adrien because he seems so alone, so lonely.The book has a number of twists and turns and I think the mystery is really intriguing. I’ve listened to this 3 times now and I am still entertained. That also has a lot to do with Chris Patton. He is so great with this series. He acts out each character and he draws you in. He really made me love this series more than I think I ever would if I had only read it. I get chills at his Jake voice.If you’ve read this book I recommend you give the audiobook a try. It’s really wonderful. It’s not perfect, there are some weird pauses, but the performance enhances everything about the story!
