This is a hugely frustrating book to read. The series is competently written, but the motivations that drive the action just jump the shark in this installment. Smart, powerful characters sit around with their thumbs up their butts while their situation goes to hell around them, for no reason. The big Secret is only a secret, because we are told literally 12 times that, "revealing it will cause problems." So then it's revealed by the evil guys on national TV. It causes problems. All MCs, who have progressively powered up over the course of 6 books, are powerless to deal with a local bunch of yahoos, so they sit around and do nothing till the yahoos have allied themselves, somehow, with virtually every baddy in existence. All authorities ignore mounds of evidence against said yahoos and blame the MCs for conflict. 47 casualties are treated as if nothing happened, but one dead yahoo ends up implicating and tearing apart the entire MC alliance. This is all just incredibly lazy.The central tension that drives all the books, the MC's inability to kill a family member who has gone to the dark side, is just old and tired now. You can only retread that narrative arc so many times without moving it forward. 6 books and we are where we were to begin with except worse.Hard pass at this point. The author should have treated these characters more kindly and closed this narrative before they were this frayed. Please stop beating this dead horse and write something new. I'm sure you have it in you. Holy cow is this book fantastic! It was a one day, all night read because I could not put it down. I did a re-read of book 5 (On the Wings of War) just before reading this one and I was glad I did to have the events fresh in my memory. You really need to read this series in order to fully understand the plot lines and the story arc.This book finds Patrick’s two worlds finally colliding with dire consequences. The hardest part for Jono is that this isn’t something he can protect Patrick from. Additionally, he has his own problems as hunters and demons have descended on the city and they are all looking to take him out.There is a lot of terrific action in this book. It is written in such a suspenseful and compelling way I was holding my breath numerous times throughout the book. The action is so descriptive I felt like I was there watching what was happening; I could visualize it all clearly. It helps that I have a fairly decent sense of NYC so being able to place the action in context was a plus. (And that subway scene is just one reason I never take them!!)We get a lot more insight into Patrick’s psyche in this book and while no one would ever describe Patrick as weak or vulnerable or in need of protection, so many things spin out of his control and conspire against him that I ached for him and just wanted to wrap him up in a warm, soft blanket and cuddle him. He truly hurts my heart in this book…such excellent writing. Likewise, Jono’s inability to protect him and keep him out of danger frustrates him and ultimately enrages him. I just felt so deeply for these two characters. The whole climactic ending scenes had me alternately cheering and holding my breath. Validation for my love of Jono from the beginning.In the last book we got to see Wade become more of an integral part of the function of the pack and he really comes into his own here. I’ve always loved this character and even more so after this book.So many of the secondary characters from the series are back in play here, though not a couple they really could have used! The storylines are starting to tie up and this is the second to last book and we can see things heading towards what will no doubt be a cataclysmic finale. I’ll probably need Valium reading that one! I will be very interested to see not just how the main clash plays out but how several other storylines resolve.I cannot recommend this book and this series highly enough. This is world building and storytelling at the highest level.
