Ebook About Rival reporters team up for the story of their careers in this lesbian romantic suspense filled with humor, twists, and one fierce ice queen. Ambitious Daily Sentinel journalist Lauren King is chafing on LA’s vapid social circuit, reporting on glam, A-list parties while sparring with her rival—the formidable, icy Catherine Ayers. Ayers is an ex-Washington DC political correspondent who suffered a humiliating fall from grace, and her acerbic tongue keeps everyone at bay. Everyone, that is, except knockabout Iowa girl King, who is undaunted, unimpressed and gives as good as she gets. One night a curious story unfolds before their eyes: One business launch, 34 prostitutes and a pallet of missing pink champagne. What on earth does it mean? King and Ayers join forces but they might find a lot more than just a passion for news on the dusty road to Nevada.Book The Red Files (On The Record Book 1) Review :
4.5 starsLauren King is a smart young journalist who has been buried in the gossip pages of her newspaper in LA. Going to all the parties sounds fun, except that Lauren has a passion for political news rather than VIPs. Her rival at the newspaper is Catherine Ayers, a political hack who was downgraded and humiliated into working the gossip columns after a disaster in Washington.Neither woman lets an opportunity go by to let a little snark fly, but when they come across a story with national impact, they realise they’ll have to work together to investigate it. The story leads them further into jeopardy, just as they realise there is something between them underneath the snark. This was a really fun read. I generally don’t like reading about characters who are nasty to one another, but this feels more like the snappy and sharp dialogue from a 1940s Hollywood film rather than anything really nasty. The story is presented from Lauren’s perspective, and she is clever and funny, and strong enough to stand up for herself when needed. She was a fun character. Ayers is harder to get to know, although she thaws as the story progresses.Winter was a journalist for many years and is comfortable in that realm. As a result, the characters have a sense of reality to them, as does the story. This gives the book a punch it might not otherwise have, and I loved the book for it.There was a problem at the end though. I would have happily given it 5 stars until the last few chapters as it was just delicious to read, but the ending felt rushed, and Ayers never quite managed to move to potential girlfriend material for me. This felt a little underwritten, and I think needed better resolution. Don’t let this put you off though; I’ll read this one again as it was such a ride. Review of the paperback version: I was completely riveted - by the story, the characters, the verbal sparring, the uncovering of the mystery, the building attraction and ultimately by the thawing of the "ice queen" and the vulnerability that Catherine showed. Great build, great payoff. I love absolutely everything Lee Winter has written. She's at the top of my favorite writers list.UPDATE with audiobook review:I really loved this novel when I read it more than a year ago, so when I heard Victoria Mei won a narrating award recently for the follow-up to this, Under Your Skin, I wanted to listen to this in preparation for that.Primarily this is a mystery infused with a slow burn romance between caustic veteran print journalist Catherine Ayers and entertainment reporter Lauren King, who dreams of covering politics and becoming a serious journalist. When Lauren stumbles upon something unusual while covering a corporate event one night, the two women decide to work together to uncover the story.Because Winter was once a journalist herself, that aspect is wonderfully realistic and the mystery cleverly written. Catherine is as icy as they come and Winter makes Lauren - and us - wait for the romance. But when the ice queen finally thaws... let's just say Lauren isn't the only one melting.I've heard Mei narrate other books by Isabella and Erin Wade so it took me a minute to adjust to her performing a Lee Winter book. Having been familiar with the story, I didn't hear Catherine or Lauren's voices that way in my head, but by about three chapters in I was invested and rolling right along. Early on, Mei mispronounced the name of the newspaper, the Sentinel, but someone must have given her a note because she corrected that throughout the rest of the book. This was probably my favorite of the works I have heard her perform. Primarily it was because the material was so good to begin with, but also as she progressed through the story she really settled in. By the end when there is a whole long list of texts that Catherine sends Lauren, she actually had me laughing out loud.If you're able to read this book rather than listen, I would go that route. It's a good listen - but if you had no preference one way or the other, I believe the better experience would be in written form. 5 stars for the story - 4 stars for the narration.
